When it’s played the way is supposed to be played, basketball happens in the air; flying, floating, elevated above the floor, levitating the way oppressed peoples of this earth imagine themselves in their dreams. Basketball is more than a sport it’s a lifestyle. It’s my lifestyle and I can happily say that I am number one. Being number one is good but not great. Each night is harder than the next. It’s like walking with a target on your back. Then, there is a tremendous amount of pressure on me. Me Playing in front of hundreds of people including friends, scouts, family, and fan. It’s a little hard. And on top of that grade. So I have a lot on my shoulders. It’s a lot but I love it.
Its game day and I am excited and really nervous. We are facing a pretty hard team. With their 6’8 powerhouse big man Avery Bradley. Being number one means that I’m well known in the basket community. So that means I see a lot of scouts. I have letters from Kansas, Memphis, Duke, Pittsburg, Louisville, and more. What I really want is to go to North Carolina. The only problem is UNC scouts never come out. Then, I notice that there was a man sitting in the corner by himself with a light blue and black briefcase. Enough about I got a game to play.
The game is about to start and we are warming up. I look over to look at Avery Bradley. He glares at me and announced, “This is where the big boys play!” I ignored his statement and played my game. The game starts and they win the tip-off. I strip the ball handler and go up and dunk it in. minutes past and it is the very intense fourth quarter. The score is 87- 89 we are down. I got the rock in my hands right now. I juke my defender and go up to lay the ball in and find a rude awaking. I get fouled by Avery hard. I get up very slow. Avery paused said, “Get that weak stuff outta here. This aint no play ground ball.” I make both my free-throws. They get the ball and pitched it to Avery .he goes up and get fouled. He splits the free-throws. Now we have a chance for a comeback. I get the ball and check the score it is 89-90. Ten second left on the shot clock. I wait till seven then I do a quick crossover and my man falls. I take the opportunity the run down the lane. I go up off of two feet and dunk it down on Avery Bradley. The crowd goes wild as the clock expires. All my teammates come and dog pile me. I finished the game with 32 points, 12 assist, 13 rebounds, and 4 steals. The scout smile and write on his notepad then left. I was sure to get that scholarship now. My dad rush to the floor and gave me a handshake. “That’s how you play boy. Don’t rush the game let the game come to you,” hollered my dad.
It has been three days since that amazingly crazy game winning shot that I made. I started to think about how that scout was smiling the other day and after thinking about it I started to get big headed and cocky. Today was another game day and it was no big deal. We were facing St. John’s high school. This wasn’t hard at all. I was sure this was a blow out game. They were a bunch of 6’2 guards who can’t play any defense what so ever.
Throughout the whole game I just jacked up shots. I started to turn the ball over more and stop making my shots. I was definitely having an off game. They started getting wide open shots and scoring at will. Before you know it St. Johns took the lead and kept it. We couldn’t get our crap together and St. Johns lead start growing more and more. Our perfect season ended to a team that didn’t have half the talent as us. I was furious. I finish the game with 20 points, 3 assist, 2 rebound, and 13 turnovers. It was horrible. I saw that scout leave disappointed. Amazingly even after that gruesome performance we still were going to state. I need to get my act together for the state game. I went to the only place where I could clear my mind, the gym, and worked out. With that being done it is time to show everyone what I am really made of.
Finally, the state game. I have been waiting for this all my life. This is like a dream come true. It was amazing. There were at least thousands of people in the crowd this time and there is no time to choke. I have been practicing for this day my whole life and it is here. I looked at my dad and he winked at me. I knew that meant it’s time to destroy the competition. I played the hardest game in my life. I was just playing my heart out. I had finished the game with my career highs of 40 points, 15 assists, 14 rebounds, and 7 steals. At the end my dad ran down to me and gave me a hugged me. He said, “I’m proud of you son. You made me proud!” “I did this for you pops.” I cried. The UNC scout came to me. “I heard you wanted to come to North Carolina.” he said yelling over the crowd. “Yes I do sir.”I screamed. “Well I can’t say this on the records yet, but welcome to UNC.” I jumped up in and down screaming of excitement from the news. This was the happiest day of my life. This is what I have been living for that.
